Choosing a wedding photographer is a leap of faith. You’re trusting a stranger with the one day you can’t redo: your dad swearing he won’t cry and then crying anyway, your mom’s hands shaking as she fixes your dress, the flower girl who loses interest halfway down the aisle.

Joe Mikos has been photographing weddings on Martha’s Vineyard for more than 20 years — hundreds of them, all over the island and the world. The thing he’s proudest of isn’t a number. It’s that families call him back, year after year. He’s photographed all four daughters’ weddings in one family. Twenty years after one wedding, another family called him back for the next generation’s photos.

He remembers faces. Years later he can tell you where your parents stood during the ceremony and which groomsman lost it first. And he still gets a little nervous on your wedding day — because he knows what the day means to you, and he knows the photographs are how you’ll keep it.
